There was talk in the group around Mountainshiver that they were finally reaching the journey's end and would rest soon. What had been a few moons felt like ages, and her paws were weary as she sat to rest near a large grove of trees and undergrowth. There was no scent of danger, although there were many strange scents around her. Mostly keeping to herself, her abrasive personality did the job of scaring off anyone who dared come near and try to befriend her. She didn't want to be alone, but it was all she had ever known, and assumed that it was all she ever would.

Mama. Where was mama? A tiny kit, no more than two moons, sat crouched under a bush, staring unblinkingly at her paws. The grass under paw was flattened and brown, as though she hasn't moved much in some time. And that was true. Her mama had told her to stay put. She'd be back in no time. But 'no time' had stretched on for hours, one dark sky, then two. How many dark skies had passed since then, she wasn't sure. She wasn't really sure of anything, only that mama would certainly come back and bring the mousey she'd promised and praise her for not running away or getting into mischief. As long as she kept her eyes on her paws and kept quiet, mama would find her again. No worrying, no mewling, just stillness.
So far, she was doing good. But mama still hadn't returned, and she couldn't help but feel a gnawing in her belly and a whooshing in her head. It took everything inside her to continue to 'unfocus,' to just stare at nothing and wait. But mama's comforting face, fur and smell started to infiltrate her mind the longer she sat.
Where was mama? Mama, mama, mama. Finally, she let out a tiny wail, grief and fear wracking her fragile little body.
"Maaaama, maaammma, where are you?" Her voice was frail and hoarse, and she fell silent shortly after. Tears dribbled down her face. Never had she felt so alone.

The wind was relatively strong where they had camped out. A noise started to carry towards her, but at first she simply assumed that it was the gales as they swept through the forest. However, something didn't feel right, as if something was calling to her deep down.
Getting to her paws, Mountainshiver scented the air. Whatever had made the noise was downwind, so she couldn't pick up what it might be. Crouching in the undergrowth, she slinked her way through the bushes, quiet as a mouse. It wasn't long before she came to a small clearing, and suddenly the area around her was filled with the scent of fear. Following it, she located the source in moments. Hidden within the undergrowth was a tiny kitten with fluffy gray and white fur, clearly in distress.
Cautiously, she began to approach, making as much noise as possibly to alert the kit of her presence. She wondered what on earth she was doing, walking towards a wailing little thing in the forest? Surely there was nothing she could do to help it, and surely she wouldn't want to?

[ I just remembered that cats don't cry tears. Omg. I'm dumb. ]
If she hadn't been paying close attention to the sounds of the forest at the time, the kit probably wouldn't have heard the bigger cat approach, even with the ruckus it was making. She jolted to her paws, but quickly fell to the ground with a squeak. Her legs, which she hadn't moved much in days, were throbbing.
"Mama!" She could feel the pains in her stomach better now, too. Overwhelming emotion washed over the kit, and she began to wail louder. "Mama!"
She lay on her side, legs untucked and rigid, squinting through the undergrowth. From her position, she could barely make out some fur but not much else. She fell silent. It didn't look like Mama's coat, though when she thought about it, she couldn't remember much about Mama looked like. But she remembered her milky, safe scent, and whatever that was before her, it wasn't Mama.

i mean they get eye boogies from somewhere
Unused to such a display of emotions, even from someone so young, Mountainshiver almost turned back around and left the miserable thing to it's wailing. However, something tugged deep inside at her heart strings, and she knew she couldn't leave it their calling for it's mother that probably wasn't coming back.
With a mental sigh, she finally reached the kitten through the undergrowth, sniffing it from several inches away as if it had some sort of disease. Seriously, what was she doing? The thought crossed her mind to simply thump it on the head, but she pushed the urge away and instead began to shush the small thing. "It's ok, I'm not going to hurt you," Mountainshiver meowed with her kindest tone, mentally cringing as she did so.

[ Okay, so, I looked it up, and apparently cats can cry tears but only for medical reasons, not because they're sad. So, it looks like Hazykit might need to see a vet . ] Hazykit shut her eyes tight as the strange cat drew nearer. If she couldn't see them, perhaps they couldn't see her. Suddenly, the footsteps stopped. After a few beats of silence, the grey and brown kit opened her eyes and lifted her head. Upon seeing a giant figure looming before her, Hazykit let out a shrill squeak and felt her paws begin to scramble against the grass and dirt. Weak from hunger and lack of sleep, finding a solid grip on the ground was close to impossible. "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you," the giant mewed. Hazykit stopped squirming immediately, recognizing the cat's tone as soothing and gentle. Her mama talked to her like that often. "Do you know where mama is?" She rolled onto her belly, eyes wide and unfocused. Terrified of the stranger only a second before, Hazykit now completely trusted her. She must be mama's friend. "My tummy is hungry. I want a mousie. Do you have a mousie? Mama said I could have a mousie when she got back. I'm old enough to eat big cat food now."

The she-cat really really started to wonder what in Starclan's name she was going to do. The kitten's mood had changed instantly, and it seemed that it no longer sensed her as a threat. Still, what was she supposed to do about the mother? Mentally berating herself once again, she shook her head lightly.
"I'm not sure where your mom is," Mountainshiver meowed, her voice still low and soothing, "but I can catch you some prey."

The she-kit fixed her wide eyes on the older cat, trying to process what Mountainshiver said. No mama. Yes food. Both dread and relief rotated inside the tiny feline. After a few beats, she pushed herself to her paws, legs barely able to support her skeletal frame.
"Please, mousie!" She wobbled over to Meadowshiver and buried her face into the warrior's chest fur, taking comfort in her warmth and softness. Oh, how she missed Mama's cuddles and rough licks.
"Please, mousie!" She poked her head out of the fluff and let out a loud wail this time, in case Meadowshiver didn't understand her initial request. The she popped her head back into the warrior's fur, not truly understanding that if Meadowshiver fed her, she'd no longer have access to the warmth.
