Crunch, crunch, crunch.
The sound of frosted grass being stepped on after a cold leaf-bare night. Ash's warm breath came out in a swirl of cloud as it condensed with with chilled dawn air. This part of territory that he was currently travelling through hardly ever saw snow, and if it did it was gone before the sunset the same day. But the freezing winds that came off the mountains to the right of him was enough to chill any cat to the bone. The tom was no stranger to the area having taken this route many times before, he'd travelled alone and with a companion though they always wound up separating once they got to their destination or their paths branched off. Which was fine with the gray cat, preferred even.
He'd risen early this particular morning to take advantage of the chilled morning. The path Ash wanted to take today would involve him crossing over a slow shallow creek, that would usually freeze over this time of the season. If he tried any later in the day the ice would be to thin and he'd run the risk of falling through. While the creek was wadable in the warmer seasons, the ice and cold water made the path rather risky. The spot in question was just up ahead his ears twitching at the distant sound of trickling water.
