Everything just seemed so long ago, but at the same time, it seemed like just yesterday that Calamitylight and his family had gone on a camping trip. In reality, that had been moons ago, but the memory of it was all that was left to fill the gap in the tom's heart of his missing family. In all of the chaos of the journey they've been on, some of his siblings had gone missing. Not only that, but his own mother was gone now too. It didn't seem like anyone was too worried about Pumpkinspice - she was the type to pop up out of nowhere, completely oblivious to everyone's worries, after all. Still, Calamitylight was hardly above apprentice age and found himself relying on others in the group quite often. He hadn't even seen his uncle or aunt for a while, so he was unsure if they had also split from the group at some point. Though, being observant wasn't one of his strong suits, so for all he knew they had just been behind him.
And anyone could tell that the black tom wasn't observant.
Calamitylight had momentarily separated from the group during a resting period to go hunting, but it didn't take him long after leaving to get distracted by a small flower bud poking through the frozen ground. As he leaned down to get a closer look at it, there was a rustling from the tree above him. Moments later, a small branch fell, somehow managing to land directly on Calamitylight's back, almost as if it had been aimed. The tom let out a quick yelp as he was pushed to his belly by the branch, his yellow-orange eyes darting upwards to try and get a glimpse at his 'attacker', but he failed to spot anything out of the ordinary.

A small black shape moved in the tree above the tom, its full figure obscured by the leaves and branches. Blackkit, far from her siblings and the bigger cats who had taken her in, wobbled across a tree limb, tail fluffed up and claws gripping the bark for dear life. 'Great. Now look what you've done,' she thought, ears flat against her head.
Although the midnight-cloaked kitten wasn't dangerously high in the air, she'd never climbed before and knew she'd bitten off more than she could chew. Climbing the tree trunk was easy; balancing in mid-air while dodging stray branches, not so much. 'Just one paw in front of the other,' she told herself. 'You're not going to die, so stop acting like a cowering mouse.'
Blackkit and her sisters had been adopted into a large traveling group of cats a few moons ago, and although she still knew little about her new herd's customs, she was determined to one day become what they called a 'warrior.' But not just any warrior, one of the best warriors ever to walk the earth, if not the very best. And that meant endless practice. While the other kits slept or played silly games, she was out training. Of course she sometimes deigned to chase or play mossball with her siblings, but those instances were the exception, not the rule, and she always felt stupid when she caught an elder cat eyeing them with amusement.
Today, she'd decided she would teach herself to climb. Gritting her teeth, the little she-cat scuttled forward on the branch. She let out a muffled gasp as her left foot slipped, dislodging a small branch from the main limb. The branch tumbled downwards, landing on an unfortunate cat below.
Blackkit froze when she heard Calamitylight's yelp. She had not realized another cat was nearby, let alone right beneath her. Cursing under her breath, she berated herself for the embarrassing move and instinctively moved as close to the edge of the branch as possible to see who she had hit.
That's when the branch snapped. With a loud shriek, Blackkit tumbled downwards toward Calamitylight.

With narrowed eyes, Calamitylight focused on the branches above him for a few more moments. Still, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary, so he gave a small sigh and finally stood up, shaking off his pelt to throw the branch away from him. Just as he lifted a paw to continue on his way and hopefully forget about the tree's brutal attack, another mass fell into him. This time, as he tumbled over, he could recognize that the lump that fell on his back was fluffier than a branch. And slightly heavier. And moving?
It felt like his heartbeat increased tenfold as Calamitylight's mind immediately began trying to process his situation, but it kept landing on one specific outcome: this was a surprise attack by a Wraith! Conveniently forgetting the fact that the cat on him was tiny, and had not yet tried to harm him, the black tom rolled over as quickly as he could to free himself from his attacker's embrace. It was quite fortunate that in emergency situations, Calamitylight tended to forget everything that he had ever learned, so as he stood back up to his paws, the only thing that he could remember were the words 'how do I fight again?'. Shaking his head, he decided that it didn't matter, and he spun around to meet the Wraith head-on.
Instead of the large, terrifying figure that he was expecting, there sat a small kit. The confusion was clear on the tom's face as he froze, staring at Blackkit. "What... How did you.... Are you okay?" It took him a moment to figure out what words were again after the rush of emotions that had flooded through him in a matter of seconds.
